How To Join Troop 149
Home
Joining Requirements:
Many of our Scouts cross over from Cub Scouting into our troop-- especially those who are part of Pack 149! Other interested Scouts are welcome to visit and to consider joining the troop.
To become a Scout you must be a boy who has completed the 5th grade, or has earned the Arrow of Light Award, or be 11 years old, but not yet 18. If you think that you'd like to join Troop 149, please come to a few meetings first to see if you find it a good "fit". If you decide that you do like what you see, then you should talk to the Scoutmaster about joining. There is paperwork! Then during your Scoutmaster Conference, you will complete all of the Boy Scout joining requirements which are listed below. They are also listed in the Boy Scout Handbook, which is one of the things you'll need to have.
- Any boy who has completed the fifth grade or is 11 years old, or has earned the Arrow of Light Award, but is under 18 years of age.
- Submit a completed Boy Scout application and health history signed by your parent or guardian.
- Find a troop near your home.
- Repeat the Pledge of Allegiance.
- Demonstrate the Scout sign, salute, and handshake.
- Show how to tie a square knot.
- Understand and agree to live by the:
- The Scout Oath
- The Scout Law
- The Scout Motto
- The Scout Slogan
- The Outdoor Code
- Describe the Scout badge.
- With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Child From Drug and Child Abuse.
- Participate in a Scoutmaster conference.
The Scoutmaster our our Membership chair should give you/your parents a Parent Packet which includes the Boy Scout application and health history forms at your first meeting, as well as a permission slip, phone list, and calendar and other helpful information. Our troop has an annual activity fee to cover the costs of membership, which is presently at $100 per year (plus payments for annual recharter and Boys' Life magazine). We also encourage parents to be involved with the troop in some way, for instance as a Troop Committee member, Merit Badge Counselor, or Assistant Scoutmaster.
New Scouts are integrated into a Patrol, and parents are added to the troop list-serve for communication.
What You Need:
There are several things that you'll need as a Scout. First of all is your uniform, which we wear to weekly meetings and for our camping trips. This consists of several parts:
- Scout "field uniform" (also called "Class A") shirt with council patch, troop numbers, rank, patrol patch, postition patch (if you are in a leadership position) and green epaulettes on it. (We usually provide the patches etc. as part of your activity fee.)
- Scout shorts or pants (current new uniforms are a "zip-off" combination with both)
- Scout belt (integrated into new pants)
- Scout socks (required if wearing shorts)
- Troop 149 hat (we will provide one with your name on it!)
- Troop 149 "Class B" ("activity uniform") shirt (purchase from troop)
- Our troop does not use neckerchiefs, by the way.
- You will also need a Boy Scout Handbook; we try to keep an inventory of these to sell to Scouts as a courtesy/convenience. All of these can be purchased new from the Scout Offices (Jefferson, Lawrenceville). We also have some used uniform parts for sale in the Uniform Closet at troop meetings if you are interested in that ($7 per uniform part). If you have used uniform parts that don't fit anymore, you can sell them to the Uniform Closet for $5.
